Everything New in Calendar and Reminders in iOS 27

Natural Language for Calendar

One of the most noticeable improvements in iOS 27's Calendar app is the integration of Apple Intelligence for natural language event creation. Users can now type event descriptions in plain English, and the system will automatically identify key details like people, dates, and places as you type. For example, typing "meeting at 2pm with Eric on July 14" will present suggestions at the top of the keyboard that you can tap to populate the event fields. While this feature is not as fluid as third‑party apps like Fantastical—where you can simply type a full sentence and have it filed instantly—it represents a major step forward for Apple’s native Calendar. The app currently defaults to the date you have selected, so you need to tap the date suggestion to change it. However, time detection works automatically; if you type "3pm" the event will be set to that time without extra taps. This feature leverages on‑device machine learning to ensure privacy while making appointment scheduling more intuitive.

Natural Language for Reminders

Similarly, the Reminders app now supports natural language input to autofill metadata such as date, time, and location. You can write a reminder like "get the groceries at 6pm tonight" or "send the photos to John tomorrow at 4pm," and the app will attempt to extract the correct time and date automatically. Because this feature is still in beta, behavior can be inconsistent. Sometimes the system fills in the details without additional taps; other times you must tap a suggestion below the input field. To accommodate the new input method, Apple has removed the menu bar at the bottom of the interface for adding a new reminder. Instead, options for adding images, flags, or other metadata have been moved to a dedicated "Details" interface, accessible after creating the reminder. This redesign streamlines the creation process while retaining full functionality.

Calendar Event Editing

The event editing interface in Calendar has been simplified, making it quicker to adjust times and other parameters. For recurring events, the app can now intelligently apply changes to all future occurrences when you modify the frequency setting. For instance, if you change a weekly meeting to bi‑weekly, Calendar will ask if you want to update only this event or all events in the series. Siri integration also extends to editing: you can ask Siri to reschedule an event, change its location, or add notes, and the assistant will handle the update seamlessly. This tighter integration reduces friction when plans change.

Holiday-Aware Alarms

Calendar now tracks holidays and can proactively alert you the day before a public holiday. The notification offers to adjust the time of your wake‑up alarm so you can sleep in if you don’t need to wake up early. This feature is particularly useful for people who frequently forget that holidays shift their morning routines. The alarm adjustment can be accepted or declined with a single tap, and the system remembers your preferences for future holidays.

Large Widgets

Both Calendar and Reminders receive a new extra‑large widget size that occupies an entire app page on the iPhone’s Home Screen. This widget provides a comprehensive view of your day’s events or tasks without needing to open the app. For Calendar, the widget shows a full‑day timeline with event details; for Reminders, it can display a prioritized list of upcoming tasks. The large widget is designed to give users a glanceable, at‑a‑glance overview that reduces the need to interact with the main app frequently.

Siri AI

Apple’s assistant, Siri, has gained full access to your Calendar and Reminders data, enabling natural language event and task creation. You can say "Create a meeting with Anna next Tuesday at 3pm to discuss the budget" and Siri will add it to your calendar with all the correct parameters. Siri can also pull events from other apps like Mail and Messages—for example, if you receive an email with flight details, Siri can suggest adding it to your calendar. Moreover, Siri can search across both apps simultaneously, so asking "What’s on my schedule for tomorrow?" will return both events and reminders. This cross‑app intelligence makes Siri a more capable personal assistant, reducing the need to manually organize your day.

Visual Intelligence

A standout feature in iOS 27 is Visual Intelligence, which supports adding multiple events to your calendar at once from a photograph. If you have a printed schedule—such as a child’s sports practice schedule or a conference agenda—you can take a picture of the document using the Camera app. Visual Intelligence will scan the image, extract the dates, times, and event descriptions, and present them for bulk confirmation. Once confirmed, all events are added to your Calendar automatically. This feature uses on‑device machine learning to recognize text and structure, ensuring data privacy while saving immense time compared to manual entry.

Reminders Grocery Lists

The Reminders app’s grocery list feature has been enhanced with improved sorting logic. Items are now grouped more intelligently by category (e.g., produce, dairy, meats) and the order within each category can be customized. The feature also supports additional languages beyond English, making it more accessible to a global audience. The sorting algorithm learns from your past shopping habits to suggest item placement, further streamlining the grocery planning process.

Shortcuts for Reminders

iOS 27 introduces new actions in the Shortcuts app specifically for Reminders. These include Create Group, Create List, Create Section, Delete Groups, Delete Lists, and Delete Sections. Power users can now automate complex reminders workflows, such as generating a daily to‑do list based on time of day or location. Additionally, a new "Get What’s On Screen" action can be used with Reminders to capture text from the current screen and turn it into a task. These additions make Shortcuts a more powerful tool for managing tasks without manual input.

Apple Intelligence Requirements

To take full advantage of the Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27—including natural language processing, Visual Intelligence, and enhanced Siri capabilities—you need an iPhone 15 Pro or later. These devices include the necessary Neural Engine and memory to run the on‑device models that power these features. Older iPhones will not receive these updates, though basic Calendar and Reminders functions remain unchanged. This requirement aligns with Apple’s strategy to reserve advanced AI features for its latest hardware, ensuring a consistent and performant user experience.
